Tlalx was founded in 2012 by a group of friends who were passionate about hardcore punk and the DIY ethos. They started out by putting on shows in their local community and releasing a handful of cassette tapes by local bands. Over time, their reach began to expand, and Tlalx soon became known for their eclectic roster of international artists, their commitment to social justice, and their unwavering support for the underground.
The Label
As a record label, Tlalx has released over 100 records, ranging from full-lengths to EPs to 7-inches. Their catalog is a veritable who's-who of the international hardcore punk scene, featuring bands from Mexico, the United States, Europe, and beyond.
Tlalx is particularly known for their support of marginalized voices in the hardcore punk community. They have released records by bands fronted by women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals, and they have consistently used their platform to promote social justice causes.
In addition to their own releases, Tlalx also distributes records for other DIY labels, helping to spread the word about new and exciting bands from around the world.
The Zine
In addition to their record label, Tlalx also publishes a zine of the same name. The zine has become a must-read for fans of hardcore punk, providing in-depth interviews with bands, reviews of new releases, and coverage of the latest news from the underground.
The Tlalx zine is known for its high-quality writing and its commitment to DIY principles. The zine is produced entirely by volunteers, and all of the profits from its sales go back into supporting the label and the scene.
Over the years, the Tlalx zine has featured interviews with some of the biggest names in hardcore punk, including Converge, Black Flag, and the Dead Kennedys. The zine has also been praised for its coverage of underrepresented voices in the scene, such as women and punk bands from developing countries.
The Community
Beyond their record label and zine, Tlalx is also a vital part of the DIY hardcore punk community. They regularly host shows in Mexico City and beyond, and they are always willing to lend a helping hand to other DIY projects.
Tlalx is a true community-based organization. They are run by volunteers, and they rely on the support of their community to keep going. In return, Tlalx gives back to the community by providing a space for people to come together, learn about hardcore punk, and make new friends.
The Future
As Tlalx enters its second decade, the collective shows no signs of slowing down. They have a number of exciting releases planned for the coming year, and they will continue to host shows, publish their zine, and support the DIY hardcore punk scene in any way they can.
Tlalx is a shining example of the power of the DIY ethos. They have shown that with hard work, dedication, and a commitment to community, it is possible to create something truly special. The collective is an inspiration to DIYers everywhere, and they will undoubtedly continue to play a vital role in the hardcore punk scene for many years to come.
