Martin was born in 1851 in Liberty County, Georgia, to former slaves. He grew up in poverty and had little formal education. However, he was a voracious reader and taught himself to write. In 1872, Martin moved to New York City, where he worked as a journalist and began writing fiction. His first novel, The Conjure Woman, was published in 1895 and was a critical and commercial success. The novel tells the story of a young African American woman who uses her conjure powers to help her people escape from slavery. The Conjure Woman was one of the first novels to be written by an African American author and was praised for its realism and its depiction of African American folk culture.

Martin went on to write several more novels, including In the Shadow of the Law (1896),The House Behind the Cedars (1900),and The Quicksand (1902). He also wrote short stories, poetry, plays, and essays. His work was often published in African American newspapers and magazines, and he was a regular contributor to the NAACP's magazine, The Crisis. Martin's work was praised by critics for its literary merit and its social commentary. He was often compared to Mark Twain and Charles Dickens, and his work was said to be as important as that of any other American writer of his time.

Martin was a vocal advocate for civil rights, and his work often addressed the issue of race in America. He argued that African Americans were entitled to the same rights and privileges as other Americans, and he called for an end to discrimination and segregation. Martin's work was instrumental in raising awareness of the plight of African Americans, and he is considered one of the most important literary figures of the Harlem Renaissance. He died in 1925, but his work continues to be read and studied today.
